2516 - Mr Andrew Kennedy, St Austell, Cornwall
It would be a fantastic venue!!
A place to host Cornish football and rugby cup finals rather than playing at neutral club grounds!!
2512 – Col. Peter Davies, Bellbowrie, Queensland, Australia
Formerly of Constantine, now living just outside Brisbane. I see the facilities here that Australia invests in, I see the huge participation, and I see the general health; all of these, Cornwall could achieve with a focus such as an international quality stadium. Good luck.
2522 - Keith Sloggett, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex
As a Cornishman living “abroad” in England and a regular visitor to Premiership rugby grounds throughout the country, I am always proud to see the Cornish shirts being worn by my fellow county men, and believe that Cornishmen and women deserve a chance to support their counties sports men and deserve a chance to support their counties sportsmen & women in a decent stadium in their own county.
It’s nice to see people from outside the Duchy putting their names to the petition.
Perhaps they are ex-pats, or the many rugby supporters who visit during the season. Maybe some would like to see a concert in the stadium upon their visits during the summer, or people who just want Cornwall to have a modern stadium – whatever, your support is noted and very much appreciated!
A few comments from the petition
2496 - Mr John Owen, Bristol,Somerset
I visit Cornwall an awful lot and feel it would be of great benefit to the Cornish people and economy to have a stadium.
2403 - Mr Gary Knight, Dunmow, Essex
Cornwall deserves a decent Stadium, if you build it they will come
2486 - Miss Lindsay Giles, St Austell, Cornwall
As a Cornish girl myself and a Head of PE in a Cornish College, I’m fully supporting the need for a Stadium for Cornwall with modern facilities. It will inspire many talented students within Schools to continue their pursuit of achieving excellence and playing at the highest level possible. In addition, it has the capacity to motivate all young people.
2495 – Mr Ronald Coumbe, Pontypridd, Glamorgan
Cornwall needs this Stadium. Being a proud Cornishman living in Wales were we have several, it hurts to see Cornwall always missing out. It is time for action! Come on Cornwall Council!
2490 - Mrs. Elizabeth Lean, Camborne, Cornwall
We must get our people to stop being so apathetic. I have sent to all my friends in the hope they will sign.
The call for a ‘Trelawny’s 20,000’ asking for petition friends to ask 10 of their friends to sign the petition, has resulted in 256 signatures over 48 hours. This from a base of 2214.
Hopefully, momentum will build as more people are asked to sign.
Some interesting comments were posted on the petition form, some of which can be seen here:
2347 - Professor Kenneth MacKinnon, Dingwall, Ross-shire
‘A valuable asset for Cornwall’s socio-economic infrastructure - enabling the Duchy to attract UK and International events and their economic benefits. A considerable plus for health, wellbeing and morale.’
2391 - Mrs Christine Boon
‘I have been asked to sign this by a good friend who now lives with his Cornish wife and family down in Cornwall, as someone who moved to Cornwall to please his Cornish born wife, he can understand how much you need this facility for the children of Cornwall, his new family included’!
2385 - Mrs Carole Hoskin, Bodmin, Cornwall
‘We always have to travel so far to see bands, football matches and other sporting events that if we had a stadium in Cornwall it would benefit us all’.
2380 - Mrs Carol James, St Columb, Cornwall
‘I really hope that everyone signs so that the powers that be have to listen and do something’!
2402 - Lt Col Patrick Wellington MBE, ST AUSTELL, Cornwall
‘Build it and they will come’!
However, the comment below is the one that will decide the petition’s success or failure -
2384 - Mr Walter Smale, St Columb, Cornwall
‘I wish you best of luck and will make all I know sign’!
Well said Walter, we hope everyone does the same!
So from S4C - Well done to those who have asked friends to sign the petition so far, also to those who have put messages and links to this site on their Facebook/Twitter forums.
Over the next few hours, the S4C campaign group will be emailing all our petition friends asking them to contact at least 10 friends asking them to sign the petition, and for their friends to ask 10 of their friends to sign the petition!
It’s not too much to ask, and if the people who are emailed take responsibility and get this done, we should receive something like 20,000 signatures over the next few days! Could it be a record?
How badly do we want a modern, multi-functional Stadium for Cornwall?
We’ll see over the next few days!
SO, LET’S HEAR IT FOR TRELAWNY!

While Cornwall Council hasn’t openly declared their support for a Stadium for Cornwall as yet, then clearly there is support among our Council Councillors.
Support for the Stadium for Cornwall is growing as Mr Tony Martin Conservative, has declared his support and wants to get a sports stadium for Cornwall to encourage talented youngsters.
Edwina Hannaford, Liberal Democrat said, ‘In Looe and South East Cornwall we have a thriving football and rugby set up in particular from under 8’s upwards. Dedicated families support these young people in a pastime that builds self- esteem, confidence and is healthy. A Cornish stadium and centre of excellence would be a focus for sporting activity in Cornwall’.
Also,Tamsin Williams, another Liberal Democrat stated ‘Considering our sporting tradition it is only fitting we have a stadium of our very own. I support this campaign whole heartedly!’
So evidently, the Council Councillors are certainly getting behind the Stadium for Cornwall including Charlotte MacKenzie, who is backing the Stadium for Cornwall campaign as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Truro and Falmouth.
Councillor Jeremy Rowe, St Issey, Lib/Dem has also signed the petition at 2671.
You can declare your support by supporting our Councillors and sign the petition at: http://stadiumforcornwall.com
The Cornish - for well over a century - have been a passionate rugby people and to this day, with the era of professionalism well in advance, Cornish teams continue that passion with a presence in the new National One and Championship leagues.
It is with some frustration and annoyance that this dedication and passion is not reflected in Cornwall’s sporting facilities. Meaning no disrespect to local clubs that have a long and proud history, the reality is that grounds are nothing more than a field with a shed of seats on the side and with no major re-structuring having taken place for many years, our playing fields are hardly of the ‘level’ variety.
Cornish supporters still make do with toilet facilities of the antiquated type – those of the ‘outside trough’ design backed-up with one or two portaloos. With such basic facilities, is it any wonder we don’t attract more supporters into our grounds?
Players fair no better and probably worse in some circumstances. Indeed, visiting clubs are rumoured to book into hotels rather than use the changing rooms!
Since the onset of professionalism in 1996, our grounds remain a poor reflection of what we have achieved and the old ‘Cornwall County Council’ did nothing to address the situation. Yet surely they were aware of Cornwall’s proud rugby history that comes with a following most clubs would die for. A sorry epitaph for the old Council.
With our new Unitary Cornwall Council in place, it is hoped they will have the foresight to recognise that we require a modern sporting facility in Cornwall. A facility that could contain many new innovations, making Cornwall a beacon of sporting excellence and one of which the Cornish may be proud and not the sporting stadia backwater we have become. Should we be surprised that our talented youngsters feel they have to move away from Cornwall to reach their potential? Why we can’t attract the top sporting stars and why Cornwall can’t host top class games?
In the end, it will be down to the collective political will of our Councillors and Planners. Will they recognise and understand the neglect Cornish sport has suffered because of the lack of a modern stadium? Will they see the stadium as a ‘whole community’ project for Cornwall? Surely, these concerns must be addressed alongside any ‘viability/feasibility’ studies.
As the project is gaining publicity – albeit slowly - the people of Cornwall are clearly becoming aware and supportive of the stadium project. This is in evidence on the Stadium for Cornwall website petition totals.
But does our Cornwall Council have the political will to realise a Stadium for Cornwall? I’m sure that whatever the outcome, any decision regarding a stadium will be reflected by supporters at the next election.

Council backs Slough Town FC stadium plans.

Article from the WEST BRITION - Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 11:06
Tony Martin is now the councillor for Penryn East and Mylor.
“I’m over the moon,” said Mr Martin, who beat rival Judith Whiteley into the seat by 174 votes.
“I want to save the fire station in Falmouth and keep the night cover, I want to keep council tax as it is and get a sports stadium for Cornwall to encourage talented youngsters.” Tony Martin, Conservative.
‘I certainly support the principle of the campaign itself and would do all I can to support those who are working towards it’ Cornish MP, Andrew George
‘Cornwall does need a stadium! Our facilities are currently very poor and we should serve our community better’. Miss Sandy Angove, Liberal Democrat, St Just, Cornwall.
‘Considering our sporting tradition it is only fitting we have a stadium of our very own. I support this campaign whole heartedly!’ From Ms Tamsin Williams, Liberal Democrat, Penzance, Cornwall.
‘I think it is great what you are doing. I have signed the petition and have already had my department looking into a Stadium for Cornwall and working with the Cornwall Pirates and Truro City Football club.
We have already commissioned and received a feasibility study which the new council will be able to use. We need to lobby the South West Regional Development Agency and work hard in making a stadium a priority for Cornwall Council after 4th June’.
Good luck – One & All! From Mr Andrew Mitchell, Liberal Democrat, Executive Member – Economy.
‘In Looe and South East Cornwall we have a thriving football and rugby set up in particular from under 8’s upwards. ‘Stadium for Cornwall - Cornwall Council could build a modern sports stadium for Cornwall, to the benefit of One and All; I am actively supporting the campaign for a Stadium for Cornwall.’ Cornelius Olivier, Labour, Penzance Central, Cornwall. (From canvassing flyer.)
‘I fully support this excellent initiative. Cornwall needs and deserves a first class facility’. David Nebesnuick - Conservative candidate, Penzance Central, Cornwall
‘Cornwall, with over half a million residents, needs a sporting focus which can be used by a number of professional sporting organisations’. Conan Jenkin - Mebyon Kernow -Truro, Cornwall. . (Deputy Leader - Services)
The Group would like to thank all signatories on the petition for their support so far. You have all made a statement to our Council saying we require a modern, multi-functional Stadium for Cornwall.
Also, a recent ‘mass emailing’ of petition email addresses gained well over 300 signatures and we are well on the way (along with the written signatures) to reaching our first target of 5,000 - not bad after only four months!
However, this is an ongoing petition and a figure of 15,000 – 20,000 would go some way towards convincing our Council that there is enough SUPPORT throughout the Duchy in making the building of the stadium a viable proposition.
This is achievable. If all of us who signed the petition ask at least ten friends to do the same - we would make a total of over 20,000!
It is therefore vital that we must:
A) Ask ALL family, friends and workmates to sign the petition.
B) Email all the contacts in our address book.
C) Put a link to the S4C website on all our emails and social networking groups/forums. Twitter/Face book etc:
Again, thank you to everyone for your continuing support – together we can make the Stadium for Cornwall a reality!
Look out for the ’Stadium for Cornwall’ petition advert and letters in this week’s CORNISHMAN & WEST BRITON
A comment worthy of note from Mr James Alexander, Newquay, Cornwall. - No 2131
‘I am at Truro College studying sport. Please give some serious consideration to this petition. We deserve as good as the rest of the country, yet we have to travel 100’s of miles to stadium out of County to progress in our sports’. 23/07/2009
‘We have to travel 100’s of miles to a stadium out the County to progress in our sports’. Evidence and a sad reflection of how the authorities of the past have done very little towards our sporting facilities for the future. James will be surely be one of many who have to travel outside of the Duchy to progress in their sports.

‘I fully support the Stadium for Cornwall. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our passionate Cornish supporters and would enable Cornwall to hold top class entertainment that serves the whole community. Also, built on a solid commercial basis, the stadium could include retail outlets for sporting merchandise, offices, local breweries, conference centre and hotel accommodation. This should be a real success for Cornwall’

“Cornwall has undergone so many positive developments over the past few years. There has been so much success across all fields that to not have a fantastic sporting venue which can feature the best sports people, as well as inspire young people, is just wrong”.
